About Us

Metropolitan Hotel Dining RoomThe Metropolitan Hotel, nestled in the corner of the old North Melbourne Meat Market on the corner of Howard and Arden Streets, now reinvented as an arts space, has seen many incarnations since its auspicious beginnings at the height of Victorian times in 1888.

Its builder, George Johnston, was either a very careful or a very prudent builder, in-as-much as it took him 6 years to complete the building, for which we thank him. The building is a splendid example of a well-built Victorian icon.

Craig McVean, mine host of the Metro, empathises with the attention to detail encompassed in the building and has restored the best parts of the Grandeur of the era (leadlighted windows, high ceilings, sympathetic lighting and colour scheme) without sacrificing the creature comforts that we all expect.

It makes you feel special.

Craig McVeen

Mine Host Craig McVean, previously Chef at La Madrague in South Melbourne and Browns in Toorak has taken care to ensure that the food in both the Front Bar and the dining room are of the highest standard in keeping with the surroundings.

Along with the memorable food you can also choose from an extensive wine list and by the glass as well a range of craft beers to complement the old favourites available.

So come and join us at the Met for lunch, dinner or just for a friendly drink and chat.
